In a Tuesday release, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency said it has allocated $19,233 to the First Nation under its Participant Funding Program.

The agency is conducting a comprehensive study of a proposal from Noront Resources for an underground mine and on-site mill in the James Bay Lowlands area of Ontario’s far north.

The proposed mine would produce up to 2,960 tonnes per day, with an anticipated mine life of approximately 11 years.

In July, the agency allocated a total of $48,732 to Attawapiskat and Aroland First Nations.

Previously, it had allocated $93,449 from its Aboriginal funding envelope to Webequie First Nation, Neskantaga First Nation, Ojibway Nation of Saugeen,  Mishkeegogamang First Nation and Métis Nation of Ontario Secretariat, and  $21,175 from its regular funding envelope to Environment North, MiningWatch Canada and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Wildlands League.
