With a roster of 22 lawyers, the Toronto-based firm is known for its Aboriginal law practice. It advises many First Nations and Aboriginal organizations across Canada on such issues as land rights, treat negotiations, and impact and benefit agreements.

Managing partner Renée Pelletier highlighted Rae’s “decades of experience at the highest levels of government,” as well as his background in negotiations, strategy, community and economic development.

“He’s also demonstrated a strong commitment to Aboriginal rights, and to the critically important task of reconciliation between Aboriginal peoples and all Canadians,” Pelletier said in the release.

Rae will continue his work as chief negotiator for Matawa First Nations in talks with the Ontario government on the development of the Ring of Fire.

The position will also give him a chance to work with daughter Judith, who handles both negotiation and litigation in a variety of areas, including governance, social issues, treaties, lands and resources, consultation and accommodation, and human rights.

And what proud father wouldn’t jump at that opportunity?
